On the early morning of November 8th, 2018 I drove past a very unhealthy skinny pitbull roaming through garbage, he seemed to be starving. I immediately pulled over and went to call him, he didn’t even flinch, like he didn’t even know I was there. I then noticed not only was he way too skinny, he also had gashes and lumps all over his body. I was immediately concerned. I checked to see if he had a tag, and he did not, although he had a very old collar around his neck, that was definitely too tight. I loosened his collar and then I decided I needed to get hims ome help. I named him handsome and attemped to get him into my car so I can get him fed, water and medical help. It took me about 45 minutes to get him in my car, I had to earn his trust, which took some time, and although once I earned his trust, he was still un-interested in getting in my vehicle…..I ended up having to pick him up and put him in my backseat myself.
I was 6 am, and I had no idea what I was about to do with him… I decided that since we were in Alameda, we should head to a park until a store opens for me to get him food, while I call around to as many shelters as possible to get him some help. I called over 10 shelters, no answer. We went to the park, and stalled until 8am. At 8am we went to the store and I purchased him food, dog bowls, a leash and treats. We then went for a walk around Oakland, CA waiting for the shelters to open up, Finally I decided that since they didn’t seem to open until after 10 am that we were going to head to my home, in hopes I can drop him off at a shelter by my house, which would be easier for me to check on him, pick him back up if no one claims him,… ect. I went to my house put him in the backyard and then took a quick shower to get ready for the shelters. I promise he was in the backyard for about 10 minutes max, and when I went back to grab him, he was MISSING. I then ran outside, adn called him so many times. I got in my car and drove around the neighborhood, finally after about 10 . minutes I found him, not far from my house at all, wandering the area. Talk about a heart attack. I then put him in my car and we went to the first shelter. He seems totally unphased by me being upset with him and telling him not to leave. We went to the shelter in Walnut Creek, I told them my story, and they immediately told me that since he was found in Alameda that he would need to be taken to that shelter. BUMMER. So back to alameda we went. We went to the shelter and they checked him in, I told them his story and they ensured me that he would be taken care of, and that they are a no kill shelter so they will run tests on him and check on his health, by now its after 11am.
They gave me his check in number so I can call back and check on him whenever I wanted.
I called just about every week and checked on him..
In December when I called I spoke to a lady who advised me that he had cancer and she wasn’t sure how long they could keep him alive. I was also informed that he is deaf, which explains so much!
